We begin our tour with a comfortable, air-conditioned private van and head towards the picturesque town of Litochoro, known as “The Gateway to Mount Olympus.”
We enjoy a short 15-minute walk towards the area of Myloi, which marks the beginning of the Enipeas Gorge. Our next stop is the Old Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios, hidden within lush greenery, where we discover the historical and spiritual side of Mount Olympus.
We then continue with a hike to the cave where Saint Dionysios of Olympus lived as an ascetic. This hike takes approximately 40 minutes. Alternatively, we can enjoy an easier walk on the foothills of Mount Olympus, through a green natural landscape, leading to a hidden waterfall in about 15 minutes.
The sound of the water, the peacefulness of the forest and the authentic beauty of nature create a unique feeling of exploration and relaxation.
Afterwards, we drive up to Prionia, the most famous natural location on Mount Olympus, known for its running waters and dense shade. There, at an altitude of 1,100 meters, we enjoy the impressive scenery of the Enipeas Gorge.

Litochoro is located at an altitude of around 300 meters.
According to tradition, Litochoro was built on the site of the small ancient city of Pimpleia, which was located near the Enipeas River and was destroyed by its waters. The origin of the modern name probably comes from the word “Lithochoros,” meaning a place with many stones.
This picturesque town stands out for its traditional Macedonian-style architecture and the rich natural vegetation that surrounds it.
The Olympus National Park was founded in 1938. It is one of the most important natural monuments of Greece, with rich flora and fauna.
Olympus National Park was the first National Park of Greece and covers 45,000 stremmas, with oak trees, black pines, beech trees, Bosnian pines, alpine vegetation and around 1,700 plant species. In addition, 32 species of mammals, 108 species of birds, many species of reptiles and insects, and numerous butterflies have been recorded.
Since 1981, Mount Olympus has been declared by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve.
The eastern side of Mount Olympus, as seen from the Athens–Thessaloniki National Road in the area of Pieria, offers an imposing panoramic view of the “Mountain of the Gods.” From this point, Olympus rises sharply almost from sea level, forming a huge jagged mountain mass, with the peaks of Mytikas and Stefani dominating the landscape.
The highest peak of Mount Olympus is the impressive Mytikas, at 2,918 meters. Olympus is not only the highest mountain in Greece, but also the second highest mountain in the Balkans. It extends along the borders of Macedonia and Thessaly, with high peaks and deep gorges.
The Myloi area is the main entrance to the Enipeas Gorge and Mount Olympus. It is located at an altitude of around 400 meters.
It is known for its cool atmosphere, the Enipeas River and the starting point of hiking routes towards the waterfall, which takes approximately 15 minutes, or towards Prionia, which takes around 5 hours.
This area is part of the international E4 hiking trail.
The water of the river is drinkable in almost all places, while its temperature is close to 0 degrees Celsius.
Seventeen kilometers from Litochoro, inside the Enipeas Gorge, stands the Old Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios. It was founded by Saint Dionysios himself in 1542 and was dedicated to the Holy Trinity.
The monastery played an important spiritual, national and social role during the Ottoman period. It was looted and set on fire several times, with the final destruction taking place in 1943, when it was blown up by the German occupation forces.
Today, the old monastery, where the tomb of Saint Dionysios is located, is being restored and welcomes many pilgrims.
Two kilometers east of the monastery, inside a cave, visitors can find the hermitage of Saint Dionysios and the holy spring.
The Hermitage of Saint Dionysios on Mount Olympus, also known as the Holy Cave, is a beautiful and relatively easy hiking route.
The route starts from Prionia, at an altitude of 1,100 meters, and reaches the Old Monastery, following the E4 trail through the Enipeas Gorge. It offers beautiful natural scenery, running waters and religious interest.
The Enipeas Gorge on Mount Olympus mainly begins from the area of Prionia, at an altitude of approximately 1,000–1,100 meters, and ends in Litochoro.
The hiking route, which forms part of the international E4 trail, is approximately 9–10 kilometers long and usually takes 4–6 hours.
