Litochoro is located at an altitude of 300 meters.
According to tradition, it was built on the site of the ancient city of Pimpleia, which once stood near the Enipeas River and was destroyed by its waters. The name “Litochoro” likely derives from the word “Lithochoros,” meaning a place full of stones.
This picturesque town stands out for its traditional Macedonian architecture and the rich natural vegetation that surrounds it.
Mount Olympus National Park was established in 1938 and is one of Greece’s most important natural landmarks, featuring rich flora and fauna. It is the first national park in Greece and covers 45,000 hectares, including oak trees, black pines, beech trees, fir trees, alpine vegetation, and more than 1,700 plant species.
Additionally, 32 species of mammals, 108 species of birds, and numerous reptiles, insects, and butterflies have been recorded. Since 1981, Mount Olympus has been designated by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve.
The eastern side of Mount Olympus, visible from the Athens–Thessaloniki National Road, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the “Mountain of the Gods.” The mountain rises dramatically from near sea level, forming a massive and rugged structure, with its highest peaks, Mytikas and Stefani, dominating the landscape.
The highest peak of Mount Olympus is Mytikas at 2,918 meters. Olympus is not only the highest mountain in Greece but also the second highest in the Balkans, stretching across the regions of Macedonia and Thessaly, with impressive peaks and deep gorges.
The Myloi area is the main entrance to the Enipeas Gorge and Mount Olympus, located at an altitude of 400 meters.
It is known for its cool atmosphere, the Enipeas River, and as a starting point for hiking routes to the waterfall (15 minutes) or to Prionia (approximately 5 hours).
It is part of the international E4 hiking trail and leads to the picturesque waterfall of Agios Ierotheos.
The river water is drinkable in most parts, and its temperature is close to 0°C.
Located 17 km from Litochoro, inside the Enipeas Gorge, stands the Old Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios, founded by the Saint himself in 1542 in honor of the Holy Trinity.
The monastery played an important spiritual, national, and social role during the Ottoman period. It was looted and burned several times, with the last destruction in 1943 by German occupation forces.
Today, the monastery—where the tomb of Saint Dionysios is located—is being restored and welcomes many visitors.
Two kilometers east, inside a cave, lies the hermitage (ascetic retreat) of Saint Dionysios and a sacred spring.
The hermitage of Saint Dionysios, also known as the Holy Cave, is part of a beautiful and easy hiking route of approximately 2 hours (6 km).
The trail starts from Prionia (1,100 m) and leads to the Old Monastery, following the E4 path through the Enipeas Gorge, offering stunning natural scenery, flowing waters, and spiritual significance.
The Enipeas Gorge in Mount Olympus begins at Prionia (1,000–1,100 meters altitude) and ends at Litochoro (Myloi area, 300–350 meters), or vice versa.
The hiking route is part of the international E4 trail, with a total length of 9–10 km and a duration of 4–6 hours.
